Men's Team

Australian Services Rugby Union

For 2010, note the "Emerging ASRU" team that will compete against the US Combined Services. This will hopefully give Air Force players/management/coaches a chance to be involved for 2010 and a great incentive for fringe players to the ASRU Men's team. AFRU will also extend an initiation to ASRU Coaches to AFRU activities to identify talented players that may not always be able to demonstrate their potential within the ASRC and provide game footage of AFRU Tour/trial games as required.

The 2010 Australian Services Rugby Carnival (ASRC). It is being held in Canberra between 16-22 May with Single Service Union training 08 – 15 May.

Games.

Sun 16 May: Navy v Air Force.
Wed 19 May: Army v Air Force.
Sat 22 May: Army (Women) v Navy/Air Force (Women), then Army v Navy.

Accommodation once again is an issue in Canberra and is something we will confirm ASAP. We may base ourselves in one location prior to moving to Canberra.

ASRU has a busy year with it's top priorities being Single Service Unions representation at ASRC and Pacific Nations Military (PACMIL) Cup.

Our aim is to continue to be competitive at ASRC. A big step towards a successful 2010 is match practice and fitness. This a focus area that the committee wants to investigate to develop and establish procedures that link with your individual and playing commitments for your Clubs. Most grade preseason's will be in full swing for the domestic comps in all states/territories. Nothing can substitute for time on the field and the wet season comps. This will put you in the best position for selection. Maintaining and improving fitness should be an aim for every player in lead up to ASRC. Keen on all you budding Sports Trainers to advise the committee on how to approach individual preparation for Air Forces player levels!

Training/Development Weekend

To prepare for 2010, the plan of attack is to have the week of 27-30 April as a training day window for area locations. Area representatives would look at Wednesday 28 Apr as the most likely day for areas to conduct the training/talent identification period to avoid normal rugby training on Tues/Thurs. Amberley, Williamtown, Adelaide, Darwin, Tindal, Townsville and Richmond will have the training/talent identification period at there locations. Intent is to conduct a meet and greet for interested personnel to pass on information, conduct the Rugby Beep Test and if coaches are in location they may conduct specific drills as required. For example if you are a budding half back then you may be put through a passing drill. Even if you are an old boy, interested in coaching/management/strapping/ training or just want to help out and have the opportunity to be involved in Rugby domestically or overseas.

The intent will be to take an extended squad for the first week of Single Service Union training 08 – 15 May for the Australian Services Rugby Carnival (ASRC) at either Richmond or Williamtown. The squad will then be cut down to 26 for ASRC which is an Australian Services Rugby Union directive for each of the Services.

Contact the reps below to confirm your availability. Area reps will also place information through base communication means (BRIs). Area reps will be given more guidance from coaching and management shortly.

AIR FORCE VETS - MIRAGES

On Saturday 27 March at Portsea Field, RMC in Canberra, the Air Force Mirages Veterans Rugby Union competed in the ACT VETS annual Fools Day Carnival, a round robin between about five other teams. This resulted in the 'Mirages' playing three games and narrowly drawing all of the games with strong performances across the field. Of note, FSGT AJ Smith's selfless feeding of the ball to his outside backs was to be commended! Knowing he could easily step inside off his telegraphed right foot and defeat the aging opposition, AJ instead chose to continuously deliver precision passes to WGCDR Darren "twinkle toes" Goldie, who delighted the crowd and mesmorised his opposite number with his deft wizardry!!!

The event raised $2,500 for Legacy and the George Gregan foundation. The lads enjoyed a few beers later that evening and a good time was had by all. Vets are looking for more players and old boys for future events. The plan is to conduct the event again next year around the same time period to coincide with the Air Power Conference time line. Further plans include proposing a Vets game against either Army or Navy Vets.

Women's Team

Royal Australian Air Force Women's Rugby Union Players form a combined team with the Royal Australian Navy to play against the Australian Army Women's Rugby Union team during the Australian Services Rugby Championships each year, but we hope to one day field an Air Force team if we can find enough interested players.

Flying Officer Margaret Quinn has recently been appointed as the Air Force Women's Rugby Players Cooridinator, so please contact her if you're interested in representing Air Force on the rugby field.
